Here are excerpts from our contest winners for Septembers contest, Culture Coutore:
Killer Culture
"'Welcome to Killer’s Anonymous, everyone. It’s great to see both new and familiar faces,' a tall man said. He was an older man with short, stringy, and graying hair and wrinkles forming across his face. His clothing, which looked ratty yet well-loved, seemed stained with years' worth of oil and grime. The air around him was tainted with the smell of cars and rubber, and his boots looked to be caked in layers of dried mud. Everything about him screamed 'nature-dude'. It was hard to believe that such a nice-looking middle-aged, almost-elderly man would have ever killed someone." (Hooks 1.)
Survival 101
"This country is a horror movie. They taught us how to hide, not how to fight, so I sharpen my voice like a kitchen knife. We don’t live in haunted houses, but houses haunted by the fear of waking up each morning. Because you can’t tell me this movie will end when the end credits haven't rolled. We’re not paranoid, we’re losing control." (Lafferty 1.)
Dry Alter
"I am a fish dying on an altar. Worship my gills as they draw for
breath and hold no yield. Here I lie, breathing and wheezing and gasping for air, and here you are still calling
me beautiful. How cruel of you to show me such affections when you have the hands to help.
But you won't." (Clarke 1.)
Here are excerpts from our contest winners for October's contest, Horror:
Static
"The world is made of angles. The sharp corner of the desk, the precise line where the wall meets the ceiling, the perfect triangle of a butterfly’s wing. I count them when the noise in my head gets too loud. My therapist calls it a coping mechanism. I call it the only thing that keeps the static out. "
Paddle Ball Heart
"My heart doesn't beat, It lurks in my chest. It strikes when I least expect it; a subtle though detrimental feeling. "
Portal!
Here are excerpts from our contest winners for November's contest, Non-Fiction.:
Lord Guthrie Foodington
"A long time ago, in a far-off land, there lived a wise old lord called Lord Gurthrie Foodington. In his care, his governed lands did prosper, just not how he wanted them to. Many of his commands were seen as idiotic, foolish, or as boring as can be. But he still trudges on with governing the land called Weston."
Gallows Humor
"The damned soul marched up the stairs
Await the embrace of those long dead.
It had come to the belief that no one cares,
It had already whined, cried, and plead."
Dough
"Kneading the soft, pillowy dough.
Knead it to your desired shape.
Knead to awaken its gluten.
Knead so it learns to rise.
"
Here are excerpts from our contest winners for December's contest, Nostalgia:
Chocolate Chip Cookies
"Start with one stick of butter (one half cup) that you will forget to soften first. Your mom will always soften it in the microwave for you since it melts when you try to do it yourself. She won’t mind, though; she will stop what she is doing to help you. And if you try to do it on your own and it makes a mess, she will just smile and help you clean it up."
Captured Innocence
Soft Heart, Stitched Strong
"I am cotton, thread, a quiet spark,
A little shape built from the dark.
But light stayed stitched inside of me,
A softness fighting what I’d be."
This was our last writing contest for the school year.
